Supported payment rails and currencies

An overview of the currencies, payment rails, and fees for international transfers through the Neno cards service, including allowed countries for outgoing and incoming transfers and the four fee groups.

Your Neno account supports the payment rails needed to run International Credit Transfers cleanly and efficiently. This article covers the supported currencies, the available rails, and the fees for sending money internationally through the Neno cards service.

Payment rails

A payment rail is the network that connects the parties in a local or international financial transaction. Payment rails make sure funds can be sent and received reliably, regardless of currency or payment method.

Two common examples are SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) and SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication):

  • SEPA: euro transfers within Europe

  • SWIFT: a global network for international transactions

Currencies and rails

From your Neno account you can move a range of currencies worldwide, each with its own transfer options.

Outgoing allowed countries

You can send International Credit Transfers on local rails in local currencies. You can also send them over the SWIFT network using the swift_code rail in US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), or British Pounds Sterling (GBP). Any SWIFT transfer attempted in a currency other than USD, EUR, or GBP is rejected.

Each currency can only be sent on its listed rail or rails. For example, the Japanese Yen (JPY) can only be sent on the Japanese rail. Anything sent on a rail not listed in the table below is rejected. Currencies marked with an asterisk (*) cannot be sent from a company account.

Fees and pricing

International Credit Transfers carry two types of cost: a standard processing fee and a currency exchange fee. The total depends on the currency group and on whether the transfer is incoming or outgoing.

Currencies sit in four fee groups. The group determines the transfer fee, so a transfer between euros and a group 1 currency costs less than one in group 3 or 4.

  • SWIFT transfers: sending USD, GBP, or EUR over SWIFT adds an extra €5, so the total fee is €10 plus the percentage shown in the table.

  • Percentages in parentheses: the additional percentage shown in parentheses applies only to incoming transfers that have not already been converted into euros.

Outgoing transfer fees

When you send money abroad, it is converted into the recipient's currency and you pay an exchange fee based on the rate shown when you start the transfer. That rate is locked for one business day, during which you must consent to the transfer. If you do not consent within one business day, the rate unlocks and the transfer is rejected. Start the transfer again to get a new rate.

Incoming transfer fees

If you receive money in a foreign currency, it is converted into euros and you pay both a processing fee and a currency exchange fee. If you receive money already in euros, you pay only the processing fee.

Same-country transfers (domestic SWIFT): in some cases you may see a €5 fee for receiving euros from within the same country. This happens when the sending bank uses SWIFT instead of SEPA. To avoid this fee on local incoming transfers, ask the sender's bank to use SEPA rather than SWIFT.
